Piezo-Resistive Piezometers

The SISGEO piezo-resistive piezometers, also known as semiconductor piezometers or strain gauge piezometers, offer a highly reliable geotechnical solution for measuring pore water pressure in soil and rock. The piezo-resistive piezometers feature precise pressure transducers, making them ideal for capturing high-frequency readings with exceptional accuracy.

The Piezo-resistive piezometers are equipped with advanced piezo-resistive technology, offering high accuracy and stability in demanding environments. With a robust construction, they are ideal for use in various applications, including dam monitoring, tunnel construction, and excavation processes.

Featuring a 4-20mA output signal, the Piezo-resistive piezometers can be seamlessly integrated into most monitoring systems, ensuring reliable data collection for both short-term and long-term projects.

Working principle

The SISGEO Piezo-Resistive Piezometers operate based on the principle of piezo-resistivity, where the resistance of the sensor element varies with changes in pore water pressure. These piezometers are equipped with a sensing element that consists of a piezo-resistive strain gauge, typically made from silicon or similar materials.

When the pore water pressure in the surrounding soil or rock increases or decreases, the deformation of the piezo-resistive element occurs. This deformation results in a change in the electrical resistance of the sensor. The variation in resistance is proportional to the change in pressure, allowing the device to accurately measure the pore pressure.

The Piezo-Resistive piezometers convert the changes in resistance into an electrical signal (typically a 4-20mA output), which can be easily read by a monitoring system or data logger. This output signal provides real-time, continuous monitoring of pore water pressure, enabling engineers and geotechnical professionals to track and assess soil behaviour and stability over time.

Typically, the user should select bill of materials based on deployment scenario:

  1. Piezo-Resistive Sensor: The core sensing component that measures changes in pore pressure.
  2. Filters: For soil and water filtration, specific to the conditions of the installation.
  3. Data Logging Interface: This is the interface that allows the piezometer to connect with compatible data loggers for data collection and monitoring.
  • MIND Portable Readout: A compact, multichannel readout unit for local readings of Sisgeo instruments.
  • CRD-400 READOUT: CRD-400 is a new generation multipurpose readout designed to take readings of all instruments including vibrating wire.
  • WR-Log Wireless Node: Wireless data transmission and remote monitoring through the node.
  • OMNIAlog Datalogger: Centralized data collection for remote monitoring and analysis.
