Tilt Beam Sensors

The Tilt Beam Sensor is a MEMS-based tilt measurement device mounted on a rigid aluminium beam, typically ranging from 1 to 3 meters in length. This sensor is used for detecting tilting or displacement in structures available in both digital (360°) and analog (4-20mA output) versions, making it adaptable to different measurement needs.

Tilt Beam Sensors are typically used in a chain to measure continuous displacement or in standalone application to measure tilt displacement between two points (or ends of the beam).

The Tilt Beam sensor is commonly applied in monitoring differential settlements or heaves in horizontal chain structures, although it can also be installed horizontally, vertically, or inclined, either in chains or standalone configurations. The sensor is equipped with an adjustment plate for easy installation and is ideal for tracking tilting or displacement across civil engineering applications such as diaphragm walls, dams, tunnels, deep excavations, and unstable slopes.

Typically, the user should select bill of materials based on deployment scenario:

  1. Tilt Beam: The main structural component, typically made of aluminium, that supports the sensor and allows it to detect tilting or displacement over a range of applications.
  2. MEMS Tilt Sensor: The core sensor technology responsible for measuring tilt and displacement. The sensor uses MEMS (Micro-Electromechanical Systems) technology for high precision and stability in measurements.
  3. Data Logging Interface: This is the interface that allows the tiltmeter to connect with compatible data loggers for data collection and monitoring.
  • WR-Log Wireless Node: Wireless data transmission and remote monitoring through the node.
  • OMNIAlog Datalogger: Centralized data collection for remote monitoring and analysis.
  • MIND Portable Readout: A compact, multichannel readout unit for local readings of Sisgeo instruments.
  • CRD-400 READOUT: CRD-400 is a new generation multipurpose readout designed to take readings of all instruments including vibrating wire.

Applications of the Tilt Beam Sensors

  • Structural Monitoring: Used in civil engineering projects to monitor the stability and integrity of structures, detecting tilting or displacement.
  • Differential Settlement Monitoring: Ideal for tracking differential settlements or heaves in horizontal chain structures like diaphragm walls or large-scale foundations.
  • Tunnel Monitoring: Applied to monitor ground movement and settlement in tunnels, ensuring their safety during construction and throughout their lifespan.
  • Dam Monitoring: Used for monitoring tilting and structural shifts in dams, providing essential data to assess the risk of failure.
  • Deep Excavations: Ensures the stability of structures in deep excavation areas by detecting any changes in tilt or displacement.
  • Unstable Slopes: Applied to monitor slopes that are at risk of sliding or other forms of instability, helping to prevent land shifts and potential landslides.
  • Geotechnical Monitoring: Used in geotechnical engineering for monitoring ground movements and ensuring the safety of infrastructures such as retaining walls and foundations.
  • Land Subsidence Monitoring: Ideal for detecting tilting or displacement due to land subsidence, offering valuable data for managing and mitigating risks.
