360° Digital MEMS Tiltmeter

The 360° Digital MEMS Tiltmeter is a high-precision instrument designed for structural health monitoring. It features 360° calibration across three axes, ensuring accurate measurements regardless of installation orientation.

This MEMS tilt sensor offers exceptional performance, low thermal drift, and is used for structural health monitoring (e.g. – tilting in buildings, bridges, dams & tunnels) and for monitoring stability of structures nearby underground excavations. It provides data transparency with outputs for temperature, voltage, and gravity acceleration, with RS485 and Modbus RTU compatibility.

For data collection, 360° MEMS tiltmeter offers various reading options: local reading via the MIND portable readout, a wireless connection using the WR-Log node, or centralized data collection with the OMNIAlog datalogger for remote monitoring. The tiltmeter supports wireless communication, ideal for monitoring embankments, slopes, tunnels, and infrastructure projects.

Typically, the user should select bill of materials based on deployment scenario:

1.      MEMS Tiltmeter Sensor: High-accuracy sensor measuring inclination along three axes.

2.      MIND Portable Readout: A compact, multichannel readout unit for local readings of Sisgeo instruments.

3.      WR-Log Wireless Node: Wireless data transmission and remote monitoring through the node.

4.      OMNIAlog Datalogger: Centralized data collection for remote monitoring and analysis.

5.      Protective Housing: To safeguard the tiltmeters in harsh conditions (specific housing may be needed based on environment).

Working Principle of 360° Tiltmeter:

A 360° tiltmeter utilizes a triaxial MEMS accelerometer to measure tilt by detecting accelerations along three axes: x, y, and z. The accelerations on these axes are used to calculate the tilts of a structure. When installed on different surfaces, the MEMS sensor aligns with the structure’s orientation, with each axis measuring rotations on specific planes (ZY, XZ, YX). For vertical or horizontal installations, the tiltmeter outputs data from specific channels—channels 1, 2, and 3—based on the plane rotations (ZY, XZ, YX). Additionally, channels 4, 5, and 6 measure inclinations with respect to gravity. The system's design ensures precise monitoring without the need for complex positioning, enabling accurate tilt measurements across a 360° range.

Applications of the 360° Digital MEMS Tiltmeter

  • Structural Health Monitoring (SHM)
  • Install on buildings to check safety, adjacent to excavation locations.
  • Historical buildings.
  • Diaphragms & retaining walls (Detect deformation over time).
  • Mining (Measure ground shifts).
