RadarSens

RadarSens is a safe and reliable radar-based non-contact level monitoring system for wastewater and sewer networks. Installed inside a sewer manhole, It uses advanced radar technology to continuously measure changing levels of wastewater in sewers, up to 3 meters depth with ±0.5% accuracy even in the most dangerous (ATEX Zone 0 certified) areas - to notify utility engineers of potential sewer overflow in manholes BEFORE it happens.

Built tough with an IP68 waterproof design, it runs on a long-lasting battery which can last up to 5 years (no need for power supply connections) and is easy to set up using a mobile app. With RadarSens, you get quick, hassle-free installation and trusted performance over time.

RadarSens is usually integrated with a datalogger such as Intelligens WW for remote monitoring based on data transmission of monitored sewage/wastewater levels with alarms based on rising level thresholds. The device also monitors temperature, sensor orientation (pitch & roll) and signal intensity which helps detect blockages and movement.

Working Principle – RadarSens

The RadarSens is a non-contact radar-based level monitoring system designed for use in wastewater and sewer networks. It operates by using Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar technology to measure the distance between the sensor and the surface of the liquid below.

How It Works: Step-by-Step

1. Radar Pulse Emission

The RadarSens sensor emits a continuous radar signal toward the surface of the liquid below (such as sewage or stormwater) using high-frequency radio waves.

2. Signal Reflection

When the signal hits the surface of the liquid, it reflects toward the sensor.

3. Time Delay Calculation

The sensor precisely measures the time delay between when the signal was sent and when it returns. This delay is proportional to the distance between the sensor and the liquid surface.

4. Level Determination

Using the known installation height and the measured distance, the system calculates the liquid level in the chamber or tank.

5. Data Transmission

The measured level data is transmitted via the Intelligens WW Data Logger to the DataGate™ cloud platform for storage, analysis, and real-time monitoring.

6. Local Bluetooth® Diagnostics

During installation or maintenance, technicians can use the Bluetooth® connection and the HWM Deployment App to:

    • Verify in-chamber signal strength
    • Check echo quality
    • Confirm sensor alignment (with optional laser tool)

7. Sensor Health Monitoring

RadarSens also monitors:

    • Sensor pitch and roll (alignment)
    • Chamber temperature
    • Signal reliability
    • Alerts and diagnostics if anomalies are detected

Applications of RadarSens:

  1. Sewer and Wastewater Network Monitoring - RadarSens helps utilities maintain visibility into the level trends of sewer chambers, identify blockages, surcharges, or flooding events, and optimize network maintenance cycles.
  2. Hazardous Area Level Detection - Its Zone 0 safety certification makes it ideal for monitoring liquid levels in explosive or high-risk zones, such as gas-rich manholes or industrial effluent channels.
  3. Urban Flood and Overflow Prevention - Early detection of rising water levels in critical chambers allows municipalities to respond before overflows occur, protecting infrastructure and public health.
  4. Smart City and IoT Deployments - Seamlessly integrates with IoT and cloud-based platforms, supporting real-time insights for city planners, civil engineers, and water authorities.
  5. Industrial & Commercial Drainage Systems - Factories, treatment plants, and commercial buildings use RadarSens to monitor their internal drainage systems, prevent environmental violations, and automate regulatory reporting.
  6. Remote & Rural Utility Management - Thanks to long battery life and wireless communication, RadarSens is ideal for remote monitoring in areas where power and connectivity are limited.
  7. Emergency Response & Early Warning Systems - Can be integrated into flood alert systems in vulnerable zones for proactive evacuation and mitigation planning.
