ALM Water Sensor

The Adtran ALM Water Sensor is a reusable, passive water and humidity detection solution designed to help operators identify water intrusion in outdoor fiber enclosures before it impacts network performance. Integrated with the Adtran ALM fiber assurance platform, it provides continuous, real-time infrastructure protection for critical fiber assets across railway, utility, and telecom networks.

Water ingress, humidity, and flooding can gradually damage fiber splices, connectors, and optical components, increasing insertion loss and potentially causing unexpected network failures. The ALM Water Sensor provides operators with an early indication of these environmental threats, helping maintenance teams respond proactively and reduce the risk of costly service disruptions.

The sensor operates without batteries or a local power supply. When water enters a monitored splice box, the sensor introduces additional optical attenuation, which is detected by the centrally located ALM through an OTDR trace. The system then generates an alarm identifying the triggered sensor, while GIS integration enables the flooding event to be geographically located.

Designed for large distributed networks, multiple sensors can be cascaded across the infrastructure for centralized monitoring. The sensor is also reusable after water exposure, minimizing replacement requirements and helping operators achieve a cost-effective, low-maintenance approach to protecting outdoor fiber infrastructure.

How Water Detection Works?

Water enters enclosure → Sensor introduces additional attenuation → ALM detects attenuation change → Alarm identifies triggered sensor → GIS helps locate the affected site.

This allows multiple remote water sensors to be monitored centrally without requiring power or batteries at each location.
